The Wawa Mountain Foundation will establish a public research park between Baltimore Pike and the Chester Creek in Chester Heights PA. The park will be dedicated to the preservation of local open space, ensuring its availability for public use, and fostering public understanding of the importance of urban forestry. The park will be called Locust Hill Gateway Park. It will employ staff responsible for maintaining trails, mowing fields, installing signage, collecting waste, and ensuring visitor safety. Income generated from the Foundation’s endowment will support the salaries of key personnel, including a director, secretary, horticulturist, and arborist crew, as well as general operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, employee training, and equipment acquisition and upkeep. To enhance community engagement, the Foundation will develop an education program focused on urban forestry. Subject to financial capacity, the Foundation may also fund onsite research initiatives and support related academic research at local universities. For significant capital improvements, such as the construction of a bridge across Chester Creek, the Foundation may pursue external funding opportunities.
